I was interested in working with the idea of the gaze upon on the female figure. I've noticed that in some traditional portraiture the gaze is fairly passive or doesn't even address the viewer. I selected two female artists that have both been working with portrayal of women in portraiture. Both painters use imagery that forces the viewer to meet the gaze of the figure, this may be slightly unsettling to the viewer given the imagery utilized, but it forced me to think about why the female body has been so readily used in this way in the past.
