Mickalene Thomas & Kehinde Wiley

Formal Elements

In my exploration of portraiture over the ages, I was intrigued by treatment of the background and the detailing of the space that the figure was placed into. I am interested in the various choices that artists make to contextualize their figure into time, space or place. These two artists utilize an extreme form of patterning in their backgrounds, which was interesting for me to consider alongside more traditional choices for backgrounds of portraits.

Mickalene Thomas. Din, une très belle négresse #2, 2012. Rhinestones, acrylic paint, and oil enamel on wood panel, 102 x 84".
